Levi's sues Evisu

Announced earlier today, Levi's is suing Evisu over "Private Stock" Jeans collection. The Evisu brand was not interested in designing new denim, but to pay tribute to the old Levi's 1944 501 Jeans, 1890 Nevada, and 1917 Campbell Style.

However, this is not the first legal run in Levi's has had with Evisu. In 1999 Evisu was sued for having pocket designs too similar to Levi's, and having the older name (which Levi's legally rid Evisu of) "Evis" on their tags. Evisu's original brand name idea was Evis after Japanese God of Prosperity.

A funny twist to the story is that Levi's never filed their red tab as a trademark in Japan, where the Jeans are currently sold with Levi's signature red tab.

Alexander McQueen label to Launch Men's Underwear Collection

After the recent and tragic death of the beloved fashion designer, Alexander McQueen, the label announces the launch of a Men's Underwear Collection to hit runways in 2011. According to WWD, the new collection will include basic underwear, boxer shorts and briefs bearing his signature skull prints and all over feather prints.

The collection will be available on AlexanderMcQueen.com and department stores worldwide, ranging anywhere from $52 -550.

Gap to Expand into Australia

The United States largest clothing chain, Gap Inc., announced on Wednesday that they will be expanding to Australia via a franchise agreement. Australia will be the 24th country that sells Gap clothing.

The first Gap store is to open in the Chadstone Mall in Melbourne in the Fall of 2010.

Friedman's Former CEO Sentenced: 12 Years

The 49-year-old former CEO of Friedman's Fine Jewelers, Bradley Stinn, was just sentenced after a six-week trial to 12 years in prison. The charges were for security fraud, mail fraud, and conspiracy.

The company had been conspiring and hiding the chain's financial performance from investors, having their serious problems amount to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Friedman's, once the United States 3rd largest fine jewelry retailer, filled for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in January 2005, and was later liquidated.

Stinn's attorney said that the chargers were too harsh and out of line, and will be filling for an appeal.

Seven for All Mankind to do Eyewear

Seven for All Mankind is unzipping the jeans and slipping on some shades.

The 9-year old denim brand is responsible for luxury denim pants sold at high-end retailers. The high-quality products are result of great resources for production, and a style that sells its self.

The brand's categories are denim, footwear, handbags, and sports wear.

Dior: The Bohan Years

Marc Bohen has taken control of the Dior fashion house for three decades, and is the subject of an exhibition to open today at the French fashion house's museum in Granville.

Bohen has been responsible for the fashions worn by the famous Jackie Kennedy and Sophia Loren. In the exhibition around 60 couture designs will be on display. Bohen was the couturier for Dior from 1961-1989 and debuted children's wear, men's wear, and Miss Dior.

The exhibition will run through September 20th.

Tough Times

As we all know, the United States is in a recession, and we are dealing with every bit of problems that come along with this turn of change. This blog has and will be dedicated to compiling research in various topics of fashion related business, but with the down turn of the economy, all of the news I report might be entertaining, but also sorrowful.

I am going to try to venture off in to some other categories of blogging, such as marketing and advertising to help the offset of the depressing 'every retailer in America will go bankrupt before 2010' daily news. Also, I am going to try to make this a daily thing...hopefully.

Men's Fashion Direction

Thom Browne, a New York men's wear designer, is launching his European Collection next week. The photos shown are from the new collection.

The collection, which is hand in hand with my predictions, are sticking to the basics. Knits are great layering items and key essentials, and jackets are cropped. Pant hems are shorter, and layering is a must.

"A lot of Europeans don't know me," Browne said. "So I wanted to do something very signature.

The mod styles and dark colors are signature for European men's wear. Ben Sherman, a British clothing company, has taken on the title of dressing the modern day mod, and has dressed fashionable men for nearly half a decade.

Ben Sherman's Winter collection, along with Thom Browne's collection, included a similar color palette of warm, dark colors. Light plaids, greys, and tanned leather are among the popular patterns and colors for this Winter.

Thom Browne's collection is amazing, and I hope to see many boys dressed like this. So attractive.

Salvatore Ferragamo is releasing a line of luxury bags that are economically friendly! The Flourentine luxury brand used a tanning technique that uses naturally derived tannins from tree bark. The bags are also lined with hand woven hemp, and come in three different colors: tobacco brown, lemon yellow, and grapefruit pink.

They will arrive in Ferragamo stores around the globe, and will only set you back between $1,190 and $1,890.

What Every Girl Wants for Christmas..

Well, most girls (including myself) want. Set to hit the web February 10, in the U.S. on February 12, and overseas in March.

The Hello Kitty offerings fall into two collections: the Hello Kitty Colour Collection and Hello Kitty Kouture. Both of which I am personally very excited about. With more than six different categories and a fresh color palette the collaboration was effortless. Sanrio defined brand identity, and MAC has been a part of pop culture since the brand was developed.

I think this collaboration is going to be a breath of fresh air to the retail slump. With the economy in a downturn, and not having enough money to buy my parents Christmas gifts, I think I will definitely be purchasing one of these token items, which are also reasonably priced (as far as MAC cosmetics are concerned). From $11 and up, the collection is worth owning. And its packaged all so beautifully.

Synecdoche, New York

According to a reporter for Women's Wear Daily, there was quite some confusion in regards to a film release in New York this past weekend. The viewing of 'Synecdoche, New York' left viewers a little puzzled to this new, big word they were reading. It is just a "play on words between an esoteric literary device and a small town in upstate New York of almost the same name."

The new film written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Michelle Williams. You can view the full trailer here. The film releases November 14th. Actress Michelle Williams said to be one of the confused ones. “They had it spelled phonetically in the office and I’d stare at it: suh-nec-do-kee, suh-nec-do-kee,” said the actress. “Once you learn it, all you want to do is use it in a sentence.”

Synecdoche: a figure of speech by which a part is put for the whole (society for high society.. boards for a stage, etc). You're welcome.

Mervyn's Liquidates

As a follow up to the previous post, Mervyn's decided on Friday that they would be liquidating the $2.5 billion company. The failed retailer will have a going-out-of-business Holiday Sale at the 149 standing locations, and will be auctioning off its store leases!

The company had a long list of unsecured creditors, including:

$12.8 million owed to Levi's
$6.6 million owed to VF Corp (which owns Vans and Jansport)
$4.7 million owed to Nike USA Inc.
$2.9 million owed to Vans, Inc
$2.7 million owed to Hanes Brand

The going-out-of-business sale is projected to hurt everyone in the retail world including Target, Wal-Mart, and J.C. Penney. The aggressive mark-downs won't be able to compete with similar products sold at the above mentioned stores.

Retailers Feel Economic Pains

With the current economic crisis, retailers all over the United States are downsizing or filing for bankruptcy. Real estate investment trust is facing the vulnerability of the economic downturn.

Many retailers are skeptical of opening new stores and new locations. Roughly 20 retailers have filed for bankruptcy protection, including Mervyns and Steve & Berry's. Plenty more are downsizing in order to not face a financial disaster. Bankruptcy protection encompasses two different chapters: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the debtor's property is turned over to a trustee and sold, all proceeds going to the creditor. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the debtor usually keeps their property and works out a schedule to pay back some of the debt. Along with the possibility of the retail chains not being open, any gift cards or store credits perviously purchased or owed will be void!

On Friday, the Dow Jone's Industrial Average fell 8.1 percent, before rising and then falling dramatically again. Macy's Inc. predicts that this fall the same-store sales could fall between 3 and 6 percent. The top decliner's among the mainstream retail stores are Dillard's, Macy's, J.C. Penney, and Wal-Mart. Retail specialty stores facing the downturn include American Eagle, Ann Taylor, Pacific Sunwear, and Wet Seal.

Some of my personal favorites from the collections in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. This is a pretty lengthy entry, be warned, lots of pictures. You can click the image to it full size, should be helpful with the collections that had more than 4 selections.

New York; Two of my favorite collections from New York were Halston and Zac Posen. Halston had a breath-taking collection packed with vibrant, beautiful colors and lines that move freely and look stunning. Some of the dresses and pant suits have similar retro lines as did garments in the 60's and 70's. Also, Zac Posen really delivered an amazing set of gorgeous dresses, as usual. I would give my left leg for a Zac Posen dress.

London; Issa, Modernist, and Nicole Farhi were three of favorites during the London Fashion Week. Issa produced a lot of different, lose fitting dresses that were elegantly draped over the bodies of the models. Some of the models wore the snake necklace accessory, which I think is simply amazing. The sheer truth came out in Modernist's Spring series. The sheer fabrics in a lavender based color palette are inspirational. Nicole Farhi delivered a fun, new look for Spring. Shorts and matching tops, long neck ties, and shape-fitting dresses are three things to look out for!

Milan; Milan is always has the most exciting and trend-setting collections over all of the collections. Gucci made way with a combination of women's casual pant suits and short long sleeve dresses. The suit pants are tailored to fit like a skinny leg jean and hits right above the ankle, leaving enough room for an over sized heel. Roberto Cavalli released elegant gowns of sheer materials and beautifully minimal prints. And as always, Versace delivered the most stunning dresses made with simple colors and loud prints.

Birds of a Feather

The feather trend continues far ahead of small hip towns and their feather accessories. I won't lie, I have a killer pair of feather ear-rings.. but the trend has grown much larger and is on the run ways of Christian Lacroix, Burberry Prorsum, and Ralph Lauren. This trend prides itself with elegance, meaning - no ridiculously colored feather boas. None.

The Boyfriend Cut

The Boyfriend Cut jean is making a comeback! Most seen wears have been super casual errand like cloths. Although the jeans are not quite chic, they do have a very nice comfort appeal to them. I am not sure about this being a lasting trend, or if it will even be popular.. but by the looks of it, it just might be.

Pixie

The pixie cut and bob (separately) are pushing through salons all over the West coast. Taking hair styles one step shorter, the looks appear on celebrities like Katie Holmes, Agnyess Deyn, and Victoria Beckham. These styles are amazingly versatile and are a nice break from watching each others hair grow another two inches this fall.

Toe-tally

Today through Tuesday, the Australian Shoe Fair will be held in Melbourne. The event is the buying fair for the footwear industry. Likely trends are shoes like pictured above (fierce, tapered heel, buckled) alone on bare legs or with colored or textured tights. Also keep an eye out for flat jazz shoes, lace up heels, and ankle boots.

201's worth $36,099?

An ebay auction for a pair of Levi 201's ended yesterday with a pretty healthy result. The winning bidder paid $36,099 (US) for the vintage denim. They were sold out of California.

Why these jeans were left in a mine for so long (or at all) are not known. The jeans have not been authenticated yet, but I have a hard time believing that these are faux. These jeans were constructed in 1890. Now, that is vintage.

From the eBay page;

This old pair of LEVIS were found in a mine in the Rand Mining District, on the Mojave Desert,. California. They are covered in candlewax from the candles the miner was using to light the tunnel he was working in. They were found with and old paper bag with the name of a mercantile store which operated between 1895 and 1898 in the town or Randsburg. Their was also a gunny sack with the initials A.P.K. and Randsburg marked on it. A.P.K. is through to be Adam P. Kuffel who was a partner in the mercantile store.

In related news, the 2nd pair or 201's ever made are selling for a cool $33,000. The jeans are said to be wearable, and were made in 1910. The price of tacky distressed denim just went up, again.

more deep-v necks??

Everyone's got one. Everyone wears them. When you go anywhere you seem them in assorted colors.. the deep-v. Just when you thought (or in my case, hoped) the deep-v neck trend was slowly deteriorating, alas it is not!

This trend has gotten a little out of control. Ten years ago, there were two types of tee-shirts: crew neck and v-neck. The commonly called "douche bag neck" tee is not the ratty Hane's white with yellow pit stains that your dad wears. This one is a little more recognizable. Commonly, the "douche bag neck" tee has an extremely deep v, and comes in an assorted retro color scheme. Some even have stupid prints on one or another side of the "V."

Although the neck-line trend is not going away, it is moving from tee-shirts to cardigans and sweaters. As you see below, Spring 2009 Ready-to-Wear is all about men's v-neck lines. Burberry Prorsum and Salvatore Ferragamo's collections are crawling with this trend.

At the Spring 2009 Louis Vuitton menswear show in Paris, hip hop producer and rap artist, Kanye West announced that he will be creating an upcoming shoe line for LV. Also in his near future is his own women's line, said to hit runways in the Fall.

In October of last year, the Louis Vuitton don himself, was lining the outside of his home with LV printed trash bags. The bags are said to be apart of the new line of disposable items. Just what everyone needs, designer trash bags.

Louis Vuitton is the new razr phone. just sayin'. Devalue is so tired, Bernard Arnault!!!

The other day, my friend Amber and i were discussing the latest extensions trends. her mother-in-law recently looked in to getting eye lash extensions. the process is quite intense, but the results are phenomenal. during the three-hour service (depending on the level of technician applying the extensions) the tech puts each lash on individually. usually about 48 lashes per eye will last you a solid three weeks, and for a nominal fee you can go and have them filled in or touched up. the initial visit can range from $100 and up. some places in the area, such as the Lash Lounge in Colleyville.

Real life results (photo amber barnhill): although Barnhill already had long, beautiful lashes..the extensions are very noticeable, and she does not have to put on mascara every day. Convenience has its costs.

monochromatic, cinematic

with fall right around the corner, you all have to be wondering what is ahead. some great e-searching has led me to find a very simple fashion trend en route. designers are showing one love; monochromatic dressing from head to covered-toe. although most of the already-seen trend are simplistic styles and pieces, some designers have thrown some flow-y shapes and patterns in to the mix.

Bottega Veneta has a clean, vintage feel.

Celine's sophisticated cuts with a white wash.

Jean Paul Gaultier dabbling in blues and velvet.

Anna Sui keeps plum fun.

Halston keeps it rusty.

a lot of chic lines and winter-whites. keep an eye out for color-coordinated tights! ha ha.

aside from fashion, there are some killer films to check out this fall

Clark Gregg is filming Choke, based on the novel by Chuck Palahnuik. The movie based on a sex addicted con-man that pays for his mother's hospital bills by playing on the sympathies of those who rescue him from choking to death. Palahnuik is famous for his novel turned movie, Fight Club. Also in production for 2008 is one of my favorites, Invisible Monsters.

Oliver Stone's W. is still in production, and said to hit theaters late October. The movie is a chronicle of the life and presidency of George W. Bush. Clint Eastwood is also releasing a new movie this October. Changeling stars Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich and takes places in Los Angeles in the 1920's. Jolie plays a mother who's son has been kidnapped. Kevin Smith is making a splash with a porno? Yes, actors Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks star in a film where their characters decide to resolve their money problems by making an adult film. Zack and Miri Make a Porno is set to hit October 31.

Comedian George Carlin passed away late last night due to heart failure. He was famous for his vulgar routines about drugs, dirty words, and the demise of humanity. This dirty old man of comedy will be very much loved and missed. The 2008 Tony Awards were held last Sunday, June 15 at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Broadway actors, theatre actors, and stage performers alike gathered together and paraded these red-carpet couture favorites.

everyone's favorite socialite has been having too much free time on her hands.

Paris loves World of Warcraft. She has a level 60 Tauren shaman named Cowww. She claims to have been playing 8+ hours a day, but a few weeks back she just stopped playing. It was weird because right before she bailed, she used her infinite horde of GPs to equip Cowww with some hardcore gear: a Red Dragonscale Protector, a freakin’ Earthshaker hammer and four pieces of the Epic Earthfury Set (Earthfury Helmet, Earthfury Vestments, Earthfury Gauntlets and the Earthfury Belt). Now that she has some free time at home, it’s time to fire up the PC and get reacquainted with Cowww and get rolling on the BlackWing Lair raid. (Gaming Today)

there has been a character online for months now with the name 'Haris Pilton' and Blizzard is finally allowing it to do something. when the new patch arrives, the character will sell designer bags and jewelry.

Ashlee Simpon followed in her big sister Jessica's footsteps, again. The pop-rock singer released her collection to Wet Seal August 22, 2008 (the same day her new album, The Bittersweet World released). The most impressive items seem to be the skinny jeans a bright color palette.

Other items include plaid mini skirts, and self-portrait screen printed tunic tops with "Little Miss Obsessive" written above Ashlee's nogin.

The Hill's famed bombshell, Heidi Montag, dipped her feet in to the fashion pond earlier this month. Anchor Blue debuted her line, Heidiwood, starting April 11, 2008. The Heidiwood collection includes reasonably priced outfit ideas and accessories alike. From short shorts to racer back mini-dresses, Heidiwood has you covered (or quite possibly the polar opposite).

The 24 piece collection caters to basically one body type. Most desirable for: Clueless beach babes. "My inspiration was just what i wanted to wear - I just wanted some fun dresses and shorts." (In Touch) During a fashion show in LA, models were dressed as 'Heidi clones.' I am not too sure about mid-drift logo tee's and boot cut denim. Just me?
